“Mi padre siempre dijo que las películas que amaba eran demasiadas como para contarlas, y hacer un top diez. Eso explica porque no puedes encontrar listas de las películas que el calificaba como maravillosas. El principio de elección es: una película por director, entraron aquellas películas inolvidables de las que mi padre y yo adorábamos hablar, y algunas ideas sobre el cine que el prefería pero no expresaba en público. Esa fue la forma en que hice una lista de las 100 películas que Kurosawa elegiría.” Esas son las palabras de Kazuko Kurosawa, hija de Akira Kurosawa, que funcionan como prefacio del libro Yume wa tensai de aru, libro publicado después de la muerte del maestro y que contiene un listado de sus películas favoritas.
Como todo gran conocedor del cine, la lista de Kurosawa está llena de cine clásico. Desde comedias mudas a cine surrealista, grandes melodramas nipones a ciencia ficción soviética. Así podemos encontrar títulos como Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari, Ninotchka, A Streetcar Named Desire, La Strada, L’Annee derniere a Marienbad, The Godfather Part II, Annie Hall, Fitzcarraldo o Tonari no totoro.
